House Prices

The avergae house price in Auckland is $780.000.  In other parts of New Zealand the avergae house goes for like 597.000 thousand  which is a lot cheaper than auckland. Greymouth the average house price is only $255,000.  Auckland is one of the world’s most overvalued cities for real estate.  I wonder how people can even afford to buy a house in Auckland when they cost so much!

Northern White Rhino

Last week we were working on learning about northern white rhino and how there are only 2 female left in the world. The scientists are trying to create rhino embryos so they don't go extinct.  I think it is very sad that they are nearly extinct and I am glad the scientists are trying to help them even though it is costing 9 million dollars.

Ancient Egypt

We are starting a new topic. At the start of the day Mrs P gave us 3 puzzles and we had to finish them to find out what we will be working on for the week. We found out we are learning about Ancient Egypt.  Here is Egypt's flag. I think that this is a cool way to do learning

Kiwi Information Report

The kiwi bird is a native bird to New Zealand. They are a flightless bird and are quite mammal-like with their adaptations. They have behaviour and structural adaptations.

A kiwi has two main behaviour adaptations which are being nocturnal and flightless. Kiwis are nocturnal which means they come out in the dark. They are also now flightless. This is because before humans arrived about 1000 years ago, there were no land mammals that preyed on birds. Kiwis predators were hunting birds that once ruled New Zealand. So kiwi adapted to walking and coming out at night as that was the best way to avoid the predators.

A kiwi has also some structural adaptations to suit its habitat. Because kiwi do not fly, their feathers have changed to a different texture to suit living on the ground. They are warmer and are much fluffier. The patterns on kiwi feathers camouflage the bird, letting them disappear in the dark or bush. A kiwi has a great sense of smell. This helps kiwi locate food beneath the soil and in leaf litter.

Many of the kiwis adaptations are not working for them because of the people's arrival in New Zealand. When people arrived in New Zealand they also brought rats, stoats and weasels. The forest floor has become a dangerous place for New Zealand’s flightless birds. The pests like rats steal the kiwi eggs and kill the kiwis. 1080 got introduced to New Zealand in 1954 to kill possums but some kiwis can come across it and eat it so they die too.

Kiwis are now endangered because their adaptations aren’t working for them any more. We need to help them by trapping the pests that are killing them so they do not become extinct.

Current Events

Today in current events we had to pick an article that stood out to us and do a blog post. I picke the one about Dan Carter.  He has switched to playing rugby for the Auckland Blues from France. He was living in France playing rugby and decided to come back to New Zealand to play for the Blues and to live in Auckland.
I think that the blues are gonna win this season becuase they have Beauden Barrett and now they have Dan Carter too.

Jordans 1's

Today in current events we had to pick out a news story and do a blog post about it. I found some interesting things about the shoes that Michael Jordan wore when he was playing for the Chicago Bulls in his rookie year. These shoes sold for just under 1 millon New Zealand dollars in an auction!

Tree Diagrams

This week we have been learning to use tree diagrams to identify all possible outcomes.  This is part of probability.  Here is my tree diagram showing all sandwich possibilites from these few ingredients.  I found tree diagrams easy to make and you can eassily see all the outcomes.  They can take a long time though.

What's in the news this week?

Kia ora,  today we did current events quiz which we do every Thursday or friday.  One of the questions was about how the Ministry of  Conservation is doing a new trial  with their new project where they will release a big drone to try and track down the predators to try and keep control of pests in New Zealand. They are going to do 3 tests with it and hope it will be ready for full use in 2022.  It cost $790,000. My opinoin is that its not going to work and its going to end up like 1080 and its going to be the best what is your opinoin.
